A study at Indiana University in the US found out that children born to fathers who are aged 45 years old and older are at a higher risk of developing psychiatric problems or even poor performance at school.

The kids were more likely to be diagnosed with autism, psychosis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The researcher also found that they had a higher probability of being involved in drug abuse.

Scientists believe that the genetic mutation which build up in sperm as they age is the main cause.

The researchers at Indiana University and Karolinska Institute of Stockholm did medical and educational research on over 2.6 million babies born to 1.4 million men to get these findings. Before coming into conclusions, researchers compared the health and performance of siblings in the same families and found the linkage between paternal age and children’s mental health and educational performance.
