Chaos erupted in Burundi after President Nkurunziza decided to stand for a third term after having served two full terms as president. Various businesses have been closed and at least a total of 11 people have been killed.

More than 1000 people have gone on the streets of Bujumbura’s Musaga neighbourhood to protest even after the government’s ban on any protest. Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp have been shut down to prevent protestors from organizing protests.

Around 21,000 Burundians have fled to Rwanda due to the threats of violence in the upcoming elections. Burundi has a population of around 10,4 million people whereby majority are Hutu and minority are Tutsi.
