Changes In Your Fingernails That Could Signal Other Problems

Many of us rarely pay any close attention to our fingernails unless its for beauty purposes. However, did you know that various changes in your fingernails could be indication of something wrong in your body?

Here are some symptoms you should watch out for

1. Brittle Nails

The main cause is usually frequent contact with warm water from mainly cleaning or doing dishes and also frequent usage of the nail polish remover. When your nails are brittle and you don’t overdo any of these it could be a sign of a poorly functioning thyroid. Other signs may be hair loss, weight gain or fatigue.

 

2. Thick yellow nails

Sometimes it’s called the “yellow nail syndrome” and the cause can be as a result of bronchitis or some other illness that affects the airways. It can also be a sign of water retention or nail fungus.

 

3. Blue nails

When your blood doesn’t get enough oxygen, your nails may turn blue. This is a symptom of lung disease or a weak heart.

 

4. Upward Curving Nails

This can be a sign of poor oxygen level is your body or malfunction of the heart and/or lungs

 

5. White spots

This is just a mark from damage to your nails.

 

6. Pale nails

This is a sign of anemia which mostly affects smokers or diabetics

 

7. Horizontal ridges in nails

Serious diseases of the liver, kidney, thyroid, heart or skin cancers can lead to these.

 

8. Nails Falling Off

This is as a result of inflammation of the nail bed. It can also be a sign of diabetes, iron deficiency or a thyroid problem
