American Airlines is one of the major airlines in the United States which is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. It is the world’s largest airline when measured by fleet size, revenue, scheduled passed carried, number of destinations served and scheduled passenger-kilometers flown. According to the 2018 Bureau of Labor Statistics report, the median US pilot salary is approximately $140,000 per year which is a rise from $137,000 in 2017. Data from Glassdoor shows that American Airline pilots are paid an average of $141,200 annually.
Generally, pilots are not paid a flat salary but a paid per flight hour flown. Most airlines give a guarantee minimum number of hours per month hence pilots have a guaranteed minimum monthly income. The average pilot logs around 75 hours per month but this can rise to as high as 150 hours depending on various factors. However, according to Federal law the maximum number of hour a pilot is allowed to fly is 1,000 hours. Pilots are also paid a per diem rate when they are away from home which covers meals and other expenses that they may accrue.
Factors Affecting A Pilot Salary Rate At American Airlines
Time At Airline: The longer you stay with an airline, the higher your pay is likely to be. At American Airlines, a first year captain flying a 737 earns around $255 per hour while one who has 10 years experience on the same plane earns $274 per hour
Type Of Plane: Generally captains who fly bigger planes make more than those who fly smaller planes. A captain with over 12 years experience flying a B787 earns $342/hour while one who flies a B737 makes $278 per hour.
Captain vs First Officer: In the aviation industry, a captain generally makes more than a first officer. A captain with 10 years of experience flying a 767 is paid $287 per hour while a first officer is paid $195 per hour.

American Airlines offers a 73 hour guarantee for long call and 76 hours short call. International pilots are paid an additional stipend known as international override of $6 per hour for a captain while a first officer is paid $4.15 per hour. The airline’s per diam rate is $2.3 per hour for domestic flights and $2.80 per hour.
