Kenya Power is planning to venture into Zuku’s market space by planning to start providing fiber optic internet to homes. This space is dominated by Wananchi Group’s Zuku who have covered a large part of Nairobi.
Kenya Power formed a new subsidiary called Kenya Power International Limited and the first task of the new company is to connect homes to fiber optic internet. Currently Kenya Power has fit fiber optic cables to all its power distribution lines since they are used to aid communication within the electrical network. Extra capacity is leased to telecommunication companies.
Around Ksh259 million a year is earned from leasing the fibre optic cables . The company believes that deployment of the internet service will not be expensive.
