As Uchumi is exiting Uganda, Kenya’s top retailer Nakumatt is on an expansion drive in the market. This is by taking over the branch building that was previously hosting Shoprite Supermarkets.
Shoprite closed because it termed the location as poor. In Tanzania, Nakumatt bought three outlets from Shoprite last year.
The new Nakumatt’s outlet is located in Naalya area at Metroplex Shopping Mall and will cover a space of 35,000 square feet shopping floor area. This brings the total number of branches in Uganda to stand at 9 while 4 in Tanzania and 2 in Rwanda. Kenya has around 40 branches covering majority of the urban areas in Kenya. There are plans to get the total number of stores to 60 in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.
