Safaricom wants to go big on data as it tries to diversify its revenue channels away from voice revenues which cover 62 per cent of the company’s total revenue. The telco will start to provide wireless internet service in big shopping malls, SMEs and government agencies all over the country.
Safaricom will lay 770 kilometers of fiber optic cable and upgrade its 3G base stations to 42mbps. The company already has 650km of fiber optic cable plus connected it to 100 commercial buildings. This will bring extra revenue through services like web-hosting, payroll services, fixed line, cloud computing etc.
