Frequent travelers outside the country have now something to celebrate. Safaricom has reduced the roaming rates for subscribers traveling to 21 countries around the world. Using your Safaricom line outside Kenya is a nightmare due to the very high charges for just very simple services.

Safaricom has signed roaming agreements with affiliates of Vodafone in Albania, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Malta, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, DR Congo, Ghana, Mozambique, Lesotho etc.

Subscribers will now get 10 minutes of call time, 10 text messages and 10 megabytes of data for Ksh200. This is a very significant drop since in some countries one is charged around Ksh100 per minute just receiving calls. In Egypt the previous charge used to be around Ksh900 for 10 minutes of call time.

Safaricom is now holding talks with Uganda and Tanzania to reduce call rates so that the cost of doing business is reduced. Uganda charges a levy of Ksh7 for inbound calls, Tanzania charges Ksh10 while Burundi charges around Ksh13.
