10 Must Eat Local Kenyan Foods For Any Foreigner

If you are a foreigner, there are some types of food in Kenya that you may have never seen in your life. Others you may be familiar with but under a different name. Here is a list of 10 must try Kenyan cuisines.

1. Mutura


This is what most call the Kenyan sausage. It is basically ground meat stuffed into goat intestines then boiled for a while and grilled afterwards. It may look weird but very tasty.


2. Bhajia


This has some Indian origin but is basically sliced potatoes with seasoning, then deep fried till golden fried. Super tasty.


3. Chapati


This is basically flout dough which is rolled flat then fried till it becomes crispy on the outside but moist and soft in the inside.


4. Nyama choma

This is a must try if you are new in Kenya. You get nyama choma by roasting beef or goat meat.

Every country has its own unique way of preparing. Kenya also has its own way of cooking beef with local ingredients.


6. Pilau


If you are in the mood for spiced rice, this is the dish for you. Pilau is rice cooked with a variety of spices such as cinnamon, cloves etc.


7. Githeri


Beans and corn is what this dish is and it is very common in Kenya. The mixture is first boiled together till its cooked till soft. It can then be fried and spices added. You can eat with vegetables.


8. Irio


This is a dish consisting of mashed peas and potato mix. They are boiled then mashed up. Afterwards corn is added.


9. Ugali


Most Kenyans say this is the staple food in the country. Cornmeal is added to boiling water and stirred till it turns to a dense block. It’s mainly eaten with meat, chicken, fish etc


10. Kachumbari


This is a fresh tomato and onion salad dish. It also has green or red chilli pepper. Most people add it to almost any dish for extra flavour.
