268 new billionaires were uncovered by Forbes Magazine in 2014. 172 of these billionaires were women which was impressive. This was an all time record and an large improvement from last year’s 138. Without a doubt, the 10 females that are found on this list also appear on Forbes’ annual 100 Most Powerful Women ranking. On a bigger scale, billionaire riches show no sign of going down. To rank up among the top 20 billionaires this year, a record net worth of $31 billion was needed, representing a significant increase from last year $23 billion. This year, the United States led the world with an outstanding 492 billionaires, followed by 152 in China and 111 in Russia. Forbes also noted people with a good amount of fortunes in other countries such as Tanzania, Algeria, Uganda and Lithuania.
Forbes also talked about the breathtaking number of women on this year billionaire’s list and some of its extensive implications, however, there is still something to be said for the fact that most of the women on this list inherited their wealth from either a spouse or a parent; and yet, 20% of them are self made, and this number has more than doubled in the past few years. The world top 10 richest women have a combined net worth of $223 billion, an outstanding figure that increased upwards from 25% from the previous year. Forbes put this number in view: these women are worth more than every professional sport team in the United States all together! These women achievements are a historic feat in themselves, but how they want to use this wealth is equally important. For example, Laurene Powell Jobs, has used her power and status to deal passionately with education reform in Washington. In the future, one can hope to see more women taking the lead in business, entrepreneurship and philanthropy all over the world.
