17 Songs When You Are In A Long Distance Relationship

Whenever you get into a relationship, there is always a chance that something may come up and you end up in a long-distance relationship. The extra distance will make you start to value the simplest things like hand holding, hugging, staring at each other, taking a walk together, doing nothing together etc.

When you start to miss your special someone, here are some songs that you can listen to:

1. Owl City – Vanilla Twilight


This is a slow song by Owl City that radiates a cozy feeling. He first started writing it in 2007 and it was part of the album Ocean Eyes (2009). Adam said the song is about telling the person you love the most that you wish they were there with you.

The inspiration for the song came about after meeting a girl when he was in high school. She moved away to college for a few years and they ended up losing touch.

 

2. Us The Duo – Take Me Home


The song is off the album US released in 2012. The singers sing about being away from your lover and not feeling at home where you are since your lover isn’t with you. It then concludes with wishes to be taken back home.

 

3. Brandy – Long Distance


This is the last single from the album Human. It peaked at #38 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs. Speaking to MTV, Brandy stated that the song deals with the difficulties of long-distance relationships. This can be a significant other or any other loved one. The inspiration came about after she met a lady who told her about her husband who was away in Iraq.





 

4. Charlie Puth – One Call Away


This is the lead single in Charlie Puth’s debut album Nine Track Mind. Speaking to iHeart, Charlie stated that the song is about anybody who is in love with somebody and doesn’t get to see that person every single day.

Lyrically, Charlie Puth assures his significant other that he will always be with her emotionally and he is readily available should she need him since he is just one phone call away. He states he is better than Superman, one of the strongest fictional superhero characters who was always ready to save the day when he was needed.

 

5. Zayn, Taylor Swift – I Don’t Wanna Live Forever


The song is about how life is hopeless when your lover is far away from you. The singers even don’t want immortality should their lover not be present in their lives since it will just be eternal pain. The song was written for the movie Fifty Shades Darker which was released in 2017.

 

6. Richard Marx – Right Here Waiting


The inspiration to do this song came about when Marx was away from his wife touring for three straight months while she was in Africa on-location filming. He gives the message that it doesn’t matter where she goes or what she does, he will always love and be faithful to her. It was first intended to be private between Richard and his wife but he decided otherwise later.

The song was an international hit song peaking at #1 in the US for 3 weeks and topping the charts in Australia & New Zealand.





 

7. Jason Mraz – Lucky (feat Colbie Caillat)


This is the third single from Jason’s third studio album, We Sing We Dance. We Steal Things. It peaked at #48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

The singers assume the roles of two lovers who live far from each other that it will take traveling across the ocean to get to each other. To them, home is where they are with the person they love. They are excited that they will get to see other again very soon.

 

8. One Direction – Half A Heart


This is a song from the One Direction album “Midnight Memories” which was released in 2013. The track is about how much they love someone and how bad they feel since they are not with them. One Direction uses the terms half a heart, half an arrow and one shoe to symbolize that without their significant other they are not whole.

 

9. Simple Plan – Jet Lag


Pierre Bouvier sings about missing his significant other because they are in different parts of the world that are so far apart that when it’s morning on one side, it is evening in the other. He says his heart is jet-lagged to possibly mean his heart isn’t caught up with the fact that they have to be so far away from each other.

The music video reinforces the feelings of loneliness by showing the band performing at Toronto Pearson International Airport and Bedingfield alone in a hotel room. When the video ends we see Bouvier boarding a flight heading to be with Bedingfield.





 

10. Snow Patrol – Set The Fire To The Third Bar


The singer and his partner are in a long-distance relationship and he misses her a lot. His loneliness has made him lay on the ground and wish that he could be taken away from the lonely place to the arms of his lover.

The term ‘set the fire to the third bar’ came about from an experience as a child whereby his aunt Jean had an electric heater. If they were very good and it was very cold she’d let them put all three bars. In the song, it represents a beacon of warmth in a long-distance relationship. They will once again meet and turn on the third bar of the heater and make love.

 

11. Avril Lavigne – Wish You Were Here


The song is part of Avril’s fourth studio album Goodbye Lullaby. It is about missing someone for a period of time. She targeted the song to be relevant in different circumstances in life when we find ourselves truly missing someone.

Lyrically, Avril states how much she cares about this guy and how much she keeps thinking about all the memories they shared. She wants to make sure that he knows she will never let him go again.

The track goes into Drake’s struggle to maintain trust in a long-distance relationship. He feels that the tension between them has reduced and has been equated to be similar to an old married couple’s. He is unable to maintain faithfulness to her so he is advising her to put a stop to the relationship.

Passionfruit debuted and peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100.





 

13. Marvin Gaye – Distant Lover


This is the 6th song on Marvin Gaye’s 1973 album, Let’s Get It On. He sings about his lover who is currently far away from him. He longs for every night and sometimes during the day he feels miserable. He ends it by pleading with his lover to come back and save him.

 

14. Justin Bieber – Be Alright


The concept of the song is basically experiencing a hard times with your girlfriend or boyfriend at a time when you are physically apart and can’t see each other face to face. You just have to let them know that in the end everything will be alright.

Justin sings about his feelings for her, how much he cares and how he will always be there for her. He tries to reassure her that this rough patch will come to an end eventually.

 

15. Alicia Keys – Distance and Time


The song was dedicated to all the lovers who can’t be together since they are separated by distance and time. It talks about waiting for you lover and be willing to commute the long distance just so as to see their smile.





 

16. The Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)


“I’m Gonna Be” is the band’s most popular song and in 1993 it reached no. 3 in the US Billboard. The chorus of the song shows that the narrator doesn’t care how far away his lover is because nothing would keep him from her. He is willing to do the impossible to get to her.

 

17. Daniel Bedingfield – Never Gonna Leave Your Side


Daniel sings about not feeling complete since his significant other is far from him. When she comes home, he vows that he will never leave her side again. He feels at home by her side.
