Whatsapp is the latest mobile app to venture into voice calls over the internet. Many people are debating whether to abandon the traditional voice calls thinking this may be a cheaper way to call.
Whatsapp is not the only option in the market but it is certainly the biggest with over 700 million users in most key markets. Some of the other apps are Hangouts, Skype, Viber, Line, KakaoTalk, Facebook Messenger, Magic Jack, Tango and Nimbuzz.
All these apps were subject to a uniform test whereby they were subjected to 3 one minute calls which were averaged. Both sides spoke for 30 seconds and it was done under a 4G network. All were on the same Android software with the latest version of the app. These are the results. (Test conducted by Androidauthority)
From the results we can see Skype consumes over 2.7 times the most economical app which is KakaoTalk. Whatsapp was not far behind. Low consumption comes with the price of low quality calls. Whatsapp consumes 740.6kb per minute
