6 Songs About Being Friends With Your Ex

Being friends with your ex is absolutely possible especially if the relationship ended on good terms. This person is someone who you absolutely click with and have shared various experiences, interests and values. You don’t have to give it all up just because a romantic relationship won’t work between you two.

Below is a list of songs about being friends with your ex:

1. Dua Lipa – No Goodbyes

This is a track from the self-titled album released in 2017. The song describes a couple whose relationship has seemingly ended and they are both trying to move on with their lives. Dua wants them to keep seeing each other even if they will eventually have to call things off.

She knows that both of them aren’t meant to be together and she doesn’t need to be under some bright light to point out the flaws in their relationship. Since they are in the dark, they could mess around for one more night.

2. Katy Perry – Small Talk

The track was co-written together with Charlie Puth and is part of the album Smile (2020). It debuted at #81 on the Hot 100.

The song is about a relationship that ended but you still run into them occasionally. The two of you won’t have an intimate conversation like before but rather an awkward conversation filled with small talk.

Katy Perry stated the song isn’t about anyone but rather was inspired by conversations and relationship changes in general.

3. Gwen Stefani – Cool

This is a song from her debut studio album Love, Angel, Music, Baby. The song generally talks about a broken-up couple that has come to peaceful terms about their relationship and is just happy for one another after having found happiness in their current different relationships. We also get to see some of the memories the couple shared while they were together.

In an interview with Billboard, Gwen stated this about the song:

Lyrically, it has a different perspective on love. Typically you don’t talk about still being friends with somebody that you loved so much who broke your heart. It made so much sense at the time. Not only did I have a lot of guilt doing the record outside of No Doubt because it felt like I was cheating on them, but I also knew I needed to do it. It was always so weird to have been in a band with the person I was pretty much obsessed with and worshipped. Then he broke up with me and we became friends. It was a very complicated situation with Tony. At that point, I just got married, too, so there was a lot of stuff in my brain.”

4. Justin Bieber – Friends

The song is about staying amiable after a breakup. Justin starts out by inquiring about her ex’s mom and how she is doing. He then goes ahead and states his intentions plus clarifies that he doesn’t have any ulterior motives other than just asking if they could be friends.

Justin doesn’t want the bond that they shared to just disappear but since they can’t be together romantically, he is willing to just be friends.

5. Rudimental feat Macklemore, Jess Glynne – These Days

The track is generally about reflecting on the troubles of a past relationship together with your ex. Instead of exhibiting anger, you show feelings of fondness and gratitude for the fact that the other person played a role in helping you find your way in life. You also both hope that when the dust is fully settled you can meet and laugh about the times you spent together.

Rudimental stated that the inspiration for the track is from their friend Dan Caplen who came to them with the idea.

6. Kiana Lede – Ex

Kiana sings about wanting to stay friends with an ex because she still loves and cares about him. This is leading to her not wanting to cut all ties with him.
