9 Songs About Breaking Free

Certain circumstances in our lives weigh us down to a point where we are not able to achieve our full potential or cause distress in our lives. In order to change for the better, we are encouraged to try to break free. Below is a list of songs about breaking free:

1. Tems – Free Mind


Tems singles about dealing with problems in her life that she fears the problems are taking over and deteriorating her mental health. She has decided to turn to God to help her break free from this cycle before it’s too late.

The song is part of the album ‘For Broken Ears’ released in 2020.

 

2. Ludacris – Runaway Love


This is the third single off Ludacris’ fifth album Release Therapy. It takes us through three stories of different young girls suffering in different domestic situations.

The first is Lisa who is a victim of a junkie mother who brings home different men and an absent father. The second is named Nicole whose dad is an alcohol and also beats her. She had a friend named Stacy who got shot in a drive by shooting hence leaving her without a support system. The third is Erica, a young girl dating a much older boyfriend. She ends up pregnant but her parents are too poor to take care of the baby.

All these different girls decide to runaway from home as a way to escape their problems.

 

3. Ariana Grande – Break Free


This is the second single on Ariana Grande’s 2014 album titled My Everything. She gives the message that life is too short so there is no reason not to enjoy it or be yourself. She encourages her listeners to break free from and cut off whatever you feel is holding you back.





 

4. Kelly Clarkson – Breakaway


The song is a soundtrack on Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. It was able to reach #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The subject of the song is yearning for a place of opportunity and anonymity. She wants somewhere bigger than just the small town she is in since she tried to feel like she belongs but she failed.

 

5. Selena Gomez – Lose You To Love Me


The song is a self-love anthem that is mainly about Selena discovering her true self through the difficult process of losing a lover. Earlier in the relationship she disregarded the warning signs in favor of continuing to live in her fantasy. This was slowly destroying her that she just had to break free from it to finally get back on her feet emotionally.

The track is the lead single from Selena’s third studio album Rare. She stated that she was inspired by many things that had happened in her life. She wanted people to feel hope that she can be able to come out the other side stronger and better.

 

6. Highschool Musical Cast- Breaking Free


The single was sung by the characters Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez. The two break free from the obstacles they had faced throughout the film. They were then finally together and feel as though they can do what they feel they were meant to do.

Breaking Free is the highest charting song from the High School Musical franchise and the only top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.





 

7. Queen – I Want To Break Free


One of the interpretations of the song is a person coming out as gay since the band members were dressed in drag. Back in the 80s, society was largely conservative and homosexuality & transsexuality weren’t widely accepted.

The video of the song featured the band dressed as the cast of the soap opera Coronation Street. Freddie Mercury plays a housewife who wants to break free from her constraining life.

 

8. Sia – Bird Set Free


This is a single from Sia’s seventh studio album, This Is Acting. Sia sings about being in a turbulent relationship led her not to flourish which is being equated to a bird that has been stopped from flying. She urges her listeners to break free from such shackles and unleash the greatness that resides within.

 

9. Adele – Easy On Me


The song marked Adele’s return after six years without releasing any new music. It is the lead song on her fourth studio album 30. Upon release, it broke the world record at the time for the most streamed song in 24 hours after garnering over 24 million streams.

Lyrically, Adele speaks about her lost marriage and the lessons she learned about family, love and abandonment along the way. She sings to her son Adkins asking for his forgiveness for leaving his father Simon Konecki. She states that she had to break free in pursuit of her own happiness even if it made her son unhappy.
