16 Songs About Divorce

Not all marriages are meant to last till death. Nothing is constant in life apart from change and the person you got married to may not be the same person years later. Below is a list of songs that revolve around the topic of divorce:

The track marked Adele’s return after a six-year hiatus from music. Lyrically she speaks about her childhood, her lost marriage and the lessons she learned and unlearnt along the way.

The song describes the time after her divorce when she felt like the whole world had ended and she became very depressed. She advised that crying and outpouring are healthy and can help one to come out of that state of mind.

Raelynn wrote the song when she was 18 years old and it was about her perspective of her parent’s divorce.

 

7. James TW – When You Love Someone


James explores the topic of divorce after getting inspiration from a young boy who he was teaching drums. He discovered that the kid’s parents were getting divorced before the boy found out so he just wanted to create a way to break the news to the boy in a way he would understand.

The song is basically about a broken home. Pink’s parents got divorced when she was nine years old and here she explores their problems from her perspective as a child. She added that that moment was one of the three times she had seen her dad cry.

 

9. Zac Brown Band – Highway 20 Ride


At the beginning of the song, the singer talks about how every other Friday he heads east on Highway 20 which is his hometown. He takes this trip to see his son whom his wife currently has main custody of since the two are divorced.

In her interview with Rolling Stone, Adele said she was able to briefly find love again after her divorce hence becoming the inspiration for this song. However, the romance was long distant and doomed from the start.

The song was written by Sean Garrett before there were any reports about Usher’s marriage troubles. It was basically about filling out divorce papers and finally calling it quits on the marriage.

 

12. Beyonce – Ring Off


While many had speculated that it is about her marriage with Jay Z, the song was instead focused on Beyonce’s parents’ 2009 divorce.

 

13. Dolly Parton – Starting Over Again


The song reached #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was also able to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart back in 1980.

 

14. Adele – Strangers By Nature


The track is a homage to Judy Garland and opens with Adele taking flowers to the cemetery of her own heart. The song acted as a personal letter to herself that she is finally in the right headspace to be vulnerable again after the divorce.

The song was written from the point of view of a child with divorced parents. Tom Delonge and Mark Hoppus both experienced their parents divorcing at a young age. They wanted to bring out the message that as adolescents we view our parents as all-knowing but as you get older you realize that they are just human and are as vulnerable as you are.

Back in 2016, Mary J Blige filed a divorce against her former husband Martin “Kendu” Isaacs. This inspired the song that ended up being part of her 14th studio album Strength of a Woman.
