She felt bad for him at that moment and came up with the opening line of the song. She then decided to create a storyline where she is in love with him and he should be with her instead of the other girl.

The song is about pretending to come to terms with a broken relationship when in real terms you’re not okay with it. His ex broke up with him and he was expecting that someday she would come running back. However, she found another man and he is jealous she is happy since he can’t.
Labrinth revealed that the main inspiration behind the song was him being jealous of his dad’s other family after he left him and his mom. The words were about how he felt when his dad left at the age of four. He wanted to write the song in a way that anyone could dig into the song and relate it to their situation.

Halsey reveals her insecurities after going through her different failed relationships. She goes through a list of her different lovers and reveals what went wrong in their relationship. She thus makes a conclusion that she is just ‘bad at love’.
