Lady spoke to Entertainment Weekly and revealed what inspired her to write the track:

My very, very, very dear friend Sonja died of cancer that day. We were supposed to shoot in, like, 30 minutes, and I left the set because her husband called me and I could hear her in the background and I just got in the car and drove. I missed her by 15 minutes and she died. I literally laid with her, with her husband, and their dog, and his son…. When I came back, Bradley was so gentle with me and we got through it. I performed the song. He was like, ‘You don’t have to do it again. It’s okay.’ All I wanted to do was sing. I’ll never forget that day. It was really a special scene, and I’ll always remember that moment.

I’m really, really proud of this song, because it’s always been very hard for me to write love songs that weren’t about love, and like, pining, love and secrecy, love and fear. If I wasn’t writing ‘Love Story,’ which wasn’t even about my own life; like really, it was about movies I had seen, and Romeo and Juliet, and sort of a fragment of it was my own life. But, I haven’t really been able to write a pure ‘Oh my god I love you’ love song, and this is the one that I’m the most proud of. So this song is like that. And basically, I wanted it to sort of exist in a timeless era, where you wouldn’t be able to guess if it was being played at a wedding reception in 1980 or 1970 or now. So, there were no instruments that we used that were new instruments since things that were invented post 70s. And so, I kind of wrote the bridge as if they were vows. You know how when people write their vows and they sort of, like, customize them; I kind of wanted to do that in the bridge of this song.

21. Dan + Shay – From The Ground Up

In an interview with Genius, Dan Smyres had this to say about the song: “It’s a classic love story, the tale told by our grandparents. Both Shay’s and my grandparents were each married for over 65 years. With all the divorces and stuff that goes on in media these days, that’s the example that we want to strive for in our relationships. That kind of love. You don’t see it much these days. It’s that classic love tale, enduring the good and the bad times. It makes love last forever. From the ground up.”

The song is part of the album Obsessed which was released in 2016.
