8 Songs About Rejection & Getting Rejected

Last Updated on: January 12, 2023

Rejection majorly occurs when an individual is deliberately excluded from a social relationship or social interaction. One can be turned down by a friend group, rejected by someone you were seeking a romantic relationship with or didn’t get the dream job you applied to. It hurts no matter what form it is. Below is a list of songs about rejection and getting rejected:

1. Ali Gatie – What If I Told You That I Love U

This is a ballad by the Canadian singer from the album The Idea of Her (2021). He describes the situation of a person reminiscing about a past relationship and wondering how the ex-partner would answer some of the questions he had. He misses her and feels like he needs her but wonders if she would reciprocate the same feelings or reject him instead.

A snippet of the song went viral on the social platform Tik Tok where it was shared in over 500,000 videos and watched by millions. The track debuted and peaked at #95.

2. Carly Rae Jepsen – Party For One

Carly sings about getting rejected by a guy and her deciding to focus on herself instead. She uses the phrase ‘dance for myself’ to symbolize loving herself. In a press release for the song, she said: To me ‘Party For One’ is an anthem of what it is to celebrate time with yourself, which is a hard thing for people to really enjoy sometimes, and it’s something I’m learning to do more and more. This song represents a lot of what this album is about for me which is romantic love but self-love too.

3. Taylor Swift – Champagne Problems

The song tells a story of a woman who shocked her would-be fiance and other loved ones by turning down a marriage proposal right before Christmas. They were longtime college sweethearts who had very different plans for the same night, one to end it and one who brought a ring.

The song is part of the album Evermore (2020). It debuted at #21 on Billboard’s Hot 100 making it the second-highest charting song off the album.

4. Passenger – Wrong Direction

Passenger sings about wanting a woman to fall in love with but he is too afraid to make a move because he just can’t stand getting rejected. Instead of asking her out, he jokes around with her in an attempt to get closer but all he is doing is moving further away.

5. Thomas Rhett – Marry Me

The track is part of the album Life Changes and peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. In an interview, Thomas had this to say about the song:

That’s the song you [definitely don’t] want to play at a wedding. That was basically my “What if” song – there was a time [Lauren and I] dated and broke up forever and almost married other people… That’s a very morbid thing to write about, but it’s one of my favorite songs on the record, I’m such a sucker for a sad song.

6. Taylor Swift – It’s Time To Go

The song depicts situations where relationships have turned sour after different things one of them being rejection. Taylor mentioned how her relationship with former record label Big Machine Records rejected her pleas to get her master recordings but instead sold them to Scooter Braun without giving her a chance to buy them.

7. Kameron Marlowe – Giving You Up

Kameron stated that the inspiration for the song was heartbreak after rejection by a girl. After moving on, that girl decided to call him and hinted at missing him. The conversation died and when he hung up he said out loud, “I’m giving you up” thus rejecting her advances.

The song is part of the album We Were Cowboys.

8. Carly Rae Jepsen – Love Again

This is a bonus track from Carly’s third studio album EMOTION. The song is about a person who has been turned down by someone they loved and tried to convince themselves that they will eventually get over it and learn to love again.
